Herbert "Skip" R. Barnes

Skip Barnes, a beloved lifelong resident of Clifton Heights, passed away peacefully on August 21st, surrounded by his loving family. Skip was a graduate of Clifton Heights High School and a retired Sheet Metal Union worker. Skip is predeceased by his loving wife Peggy, with whom he built a wonderful, love-filled life. He is also predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Elizabeth; his sisters, Paula and Debbie; his father-in-law, Peter Ferrari, and his brother-in-law, Chuck Hartley. Skip is survived by his children: Tracey and John Flaherty, Skip and Danielle, and Chris and Stacy; his mother-in-law, Ann Ferrari; and his sister-in-law, Nancy Hartley. Also surviving him are his seven grandchildren: Victoria and Stephen Goetz, Brody and Alexa Barnes, and Maximus, Weston, and Maelyn Barnes. Along with them, Skip is also survived by many nieces and nephews, his sister Diane and her husband Ron, and Stacey Mills. Skip was a founding member of the Clifton Heights Boys Club, where he impacted thousands of lives in the Clifton area for over 40 years. Coach Skip dedicated much of his time to the kids of Clifton Heights, teaching them about football and life. He also coached the Upper Darby Freshman team for four years, and in 2016 he received the Doug Connelly Memorial Award at the Delaware County Sports Hall of Fame Ceremony for his lifelong dedication to his community. Besides coaching football, Skip enjoyed golfing, especially on his annual York trips with his buddies, cheering for the Florida State Seminoles, listening to the Phillies on his porch, and spending a night out at the Clifton Inn with some of his best friends. Of all the things Skip loved, being a “Pop” was his favorite. He cherished his grandchildren and rarely missed a play, concert, dance recital, or sports game. He was their #1 fan. His dedication to his family was remarkable. Skip leaves behind a legacy uncommon for a person who never left his hometown. His example of service, dedication, selflessness, and commitment to doing what’s right will continue to inspire and impact the lives of others through his family and friends.
