Quintas "Bud" Benjamin Bedwell Jr. Quintus “Bud” Benjamin Bedwell Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on Memorial Day, May 31, 2010. Bud was 84 years old and was living with his daughter and son-in-law in Cartersville, Georgia. Bud was one of the kindest, most patient people you would ever meet who was also a hard worker and enjoyed being busy. He also had the biggest sweet tooth ever! Bud was born in Addingham, Pennsylvania (which is now Drexel Hill) on November 5, 1925 to Quintus and Dana (Hicks) Bedwell. Bud’s first home was a mill house which sat along Darby Creek. Even at a young age, Bud was very mischievous and curious. He loved to fish with his father and take out their row boat on the creek. Bud’s family then moved to Tennessee where they lived on a farm and he went to school in a one room school house. Eventually, the family made their way back to Pennsylvania where they lived in Collingdale. This is where Bud’s love of trains first began. He had a Lionel train set-up under his bed that his sister had given him. As Bud grew older, he was able to help his father who fixed up houses in the area. Carpentry was a skill he would use all his life. Bud graduated in 1943 from Springfield High School. Before Bud’s 18th birthday, he enlisted with the Navy. Bud went to Portsmouth, Virginia for three months of training. As a Medical Corpsman, Bud had assignments in Portsmouth, Norfolk and Ft. Pierce, FL. Eventually Bud was assigned for a year to an ammo ship called the Paracutin. Bud has said that there must have been a guardian angel watching over him – the ship exploded but he was not onboard. Bud was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1947. Bud met Ruth Sharpe (who was a friend of his mother’s) while he was in the Navy. They were married on November 25, 1943. After the Navy, Bud was a roofer and carpenter. He built the house that he would live in with Ruth. Bud and Ruth had two daughters. Dana Bedwell Schneck was born on July 25, 1950 (deceased) and Linda Bedwell Monk on July 15, 1953. Bud bought an airplane and a boat during this time. He liked to say he only crashed the airplane twice! Bud started working at Westinghouse Elevator and eventually ended up at Clifton Precision and CAVA Industries where he eventually retired. Ruth passed away in 1988. Bud later married Agnes Longen in 1992 where he became a part of her family. Bud and Agnes were neighbors then friends and then family. They were married for 16 years. Bud’s teasing started early and was one of the traits that you always associated with Bud. One of the funniest stories that Bud’s children used to tell was about a time when the two daughters played beauty shop and he was the customer. He was covered in nail polish, makeup and hair curlers and he loved every minute of it! Some of the best memories Bud’s grandchildren have of him are when he was working in his woodshop. The smell of cut wood and sawdust will forever remind them of Bud and all the fun they used to have with him. He built his granddaughter a doll house that was identical to the house she grew up in. During the summer, he used to fly his model airplanes and even a model boat that he built. Often, he’d let the grandkids fly them too. Bud used to build lots of things by following the directions on a kit and then later building it again without the kit which took a lot of talent. One of the neatest things he ever built was a violin that was played in the Philadelphia orchestra by a professional musician. His most beloved hobby was his trains. Bud had a whole town built in his basement with several different types of trains circling the town. He passed on this love to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bud is survived by his daughter, Linda Bedwell Monk and her husband Everard; grandson Roger Schneck Jr., his wife Stephanie and their children Tyler and Ryan; granddaughter Denise Schneck Day, her husband Mark Day and their children Cody, Hailey, Ethan and Aiden. He is also survived by the Longen family: Charles and his wife Susan; their children Charlie, Timothy, Connor and Julianne; Mary Longen Franco, her husband Frank and daughter Giovanna. Viewing is on Friday night at 6 p.m. and Saturday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. The funeral service is Saturday morning at 10a.m. Both will be held at Williams Lombardo Funeral Home in Clifton Heights. Burial will take place at Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Drexel Hill. Bud leaves his mark on many things he built – furniture, clocks, model airplanes, trains and houses – but most of all and especially on his family and friends.
