Virginia M. Roberts

Virginia “Ginny” Roberts, née Marshall, age 98, of Swarthmore, died peacefully at home surrounded by many loved ones, on July 6, 2026. Virginia was the widow of her husband of 66 years, Lewis. She is survived by her daughters, Jamie Dashkiwsky (Ray), Bobbie Kendig (Bob) and Lisa Roberts (Tony Marino), as well as by her 11 beloved grandchildren: Dylan Johnson (Beth), Nick Dashkiwsky (Nicole), Stefan Dashkiwsky, Ben Dashkiwsky (Aimee) and Alexandra Dashkiwsky (Steve Grieger); Catherine Kendig (Tim Gershey), Elizabeth Kendig (Vova Ashapatov), Hannah Kendig and Martin Kendig (Olivia Lopez); and Jake Tystad and Amelia Tystad. Twelve great-grandchildren also survive her, along with one special great-great-grandson. Virginia is predeceased by her grandson Peter, by her two brothers and two sisters, and by numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Two brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law survive her, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was the de facto matriarch and adored Aunt Ginny of both the Roberts and Marshall clans. Virginia was a whip smart, witty, selfless and empathetic woman who exuded warmth, class and style. Born to Thomas and Marian Marshall in Glenolden on Sept. 11, 1927, she lived through the stock market crash of 1929, the Great Depression and World War II before marrying Lew, in 1948. She worked as a secretary in the insurance industry before starting her family, spending a dozen years as a stay-at-home mother prior to taking a job as a saleswoman at Strawbridge & Clothier in Springfield. Virginia subsequently spent several years as an administrative assistant to the district attorney in Delaware County and then as private secretary to Judge Jerome of the Court of Common Pleas. Her final job was as office manager to the Speare & Hughey law firm in Media, where she worked until age 80. She and her family were incredibly proud of her for all that she accomplished in her long legal career. She excelled at bridge, crossword puzzles and cultivating deep and lasting friendships. She was an avid speed reader who preferred works of nonfiction and history, and read all of Michael Connelly’s fictional detective books, each one in a day. In recent times, she enjoyed beating her granddaughters at Wordle and solving other New York Times word games. Though she claimed to be a mediocre cook, her family knew better, and clamored for her apple pie and potato salad, among many other goodies. She was a passionate and devoted fan of the Eagles, Phillies and Sixers — but most of all, the Birds. For the final 20+ years of her life, Virginia lived happily in Swarthmore, in the Strath Haven Condominiums, making lots of friends there and serving on the garden committee. She especially loved her trips into “the ville” and exploring around the college and its grounds. Virginia’s grandchildren in particular will sorely miss the loving attention she showered on them and their children throughout their lives. Among the greatest joys of her life were summer vacations spent with all of them (including the parents!) in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island. Visitation and celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, July 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Kovacs Lombardo Funeral Home, 530 West Woodland Ave., Springfield, Pa.
