Dolores Bowers

Dolores “Lori” Bowers, 82, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, surrounded by the love of her devoted family. Though our hearts are broken, we are forever grateful for the extraordinary life she lived and the countless memories she leaves behind. Born on October 8, 1943, to close-knit Italian family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lori was the cherished daughter of Gaetano “Tony” and Elvira “Vera” (Neri) LaVecchia. She later made her home in West Atlantic City, New Jersey, where she lived for more than 30 years. Her home was her pride and joy—a place where family, friends, and neighbors were always welcomed with warmth, generosity and unforgettable home-cooked meals. Family was the center of Lori’s world. She is lovingly survived by her children, Mark (Reese) Bowers, Scott (Judy) Bowers, and Kimberly (Jerry Dorso) Bowers; her grandchildren, Craig (Mellissa) Brodsky, Ryan (Angel) Brodsky, and Ashley Bowers; her great-grandchildren, Luna, Rose, Priya, and Rocco; her nephews, Joseph LaVecchia and Michael LaVecchia; and her great-niece, Scarlet LaVecchia. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents; her brother, Joseph LaVecchia; and her nephews, Dion LaVecchia and Danny LaVecchia. Nothing brought Lori more happiness than being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She treasured every moment spent with her family, lending an ear and offering advice. She was never shy about telling you how she felt, and remained true to herself. Lori possessed a remarkable spirit and unwavering determination. She pursued her dreams with courage and optimism, opening Lori’s Pizza and then Serendipity Shoppe in Philadelphia. She also explored careers in photography and cosmetology, eventually teaching cosmetology at Gordon Phillips Beauty School. Later she found a long and successful career as a casino dealer, where her openness and gift for connecting with people led to lasting friendships at the Golden Nugget, the Hilton, and the Borgata Casinos. Lori found joy in decorating, gardening, shopping, traveling, dancing, and Broadway shows, but her greatest passion was cooking. She expressed her love through every meal she prepared, always knowing exactly what would make someone feel special. Her kitchen was the heart of her home, bringing family together in true Italian fashion. Lori also had a special love for animals. She treated every pet as family, spoiling them, sharing her meals, and showering them with affection. She cherished Chipper, her beloved blue-and-gold macaw of more than 26 years, with whom she loved to sing and dance. Also, her beloved pup Luigi, who was her constant companion since the day she adopted him. He especially enjoyed being her taste tester when she was in the kitchen and snuggling while watching her favorite programs. Lori lived boldly and unapologetically, always doing things her way. She taught us to dream big, create beauty, laugh often, love deeply, never give up, and embrace life to its fullest. Her strength, resilience, generosity, and unconditional love leave a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her. While we will miss her beyond words, we find comfort knowing that her spirit and memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She will be forever loved, deeply missed, and always remembered. Visitation: Saturday, July 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., at St. Helena Church, 6161 N. 5th Street, Philadelphia. Funeral Mass: Saturday, July 11, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Helena Church. Interment: Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
